On January 25, 2012, Robbie Burns Day, Simon Fraser University and their Faculty of Scottish Studies, attempted to set a record for the longest continuous reading of Burns Poetry. The old record was one hour and was shattered this year by readers participating via Skype from Scotland and Edmonton, individuals from all the Vancouver Scottish Organizations, and students from Simon Fraser University. Participating on behalf of the Sons of Scotland was Grand Chief Jim Bain who read the Burns Poem, The Inventory, written in protest of the implementation of a new tax on female servants in 1786. Theevent lasted for four hours and nine minutes and included a wide variety of Burns Poems and Songs. On hand to enjoy the event and to cheer on the Grand Chief was Executive Board Member, Murray Stewart.
It was interesting to see how many young students turned out, not just to listen, but to participate and take on some very lengthy pieces including Tam O'Shanter which was recited as a duet by two students.
Events like these usually bring a challenge and it will be interesting to see what group will try and break this new record.
