The
Birth of a New Scotland
(Tom
Messer - Editor, The Scotian)
Ever
wonder how Nova Scotia (Latin for New Scotland) was
so named? Here's an episode of Canadian history with
a Scottish flavour. During the reign of James VI from
1567 to 1625, who became King of Great Britain and
Ireland in 1603, when the Crowns of England and Scotland
were united, many new lands were discovered across
hitherto unknown seas. People who were unhappy, restless
or poor, and ill-treated because of their religion,
longed for a new life, a new beginning in these new
lands. So there arose in the New World, as it was
then called, a new England, a new France, a new Spain/
Why not a new Scotland?.....
