Roslin
Castle and Chapel
Reporter: Tom Messer, Editor, The Scotian
Roslin
(also spelled Rosslyn) is a small village on the banks
of the North Esk River about 12 miles south of Edinburgh.
It is best known for its ruined castle and chapel
or collegiate church of St. Matthew. The oldest part
of the castle - the keep - was built in the 14th Century
by a man named Henry Sinclair of Orkney on a rocky
ledge jutting into a loop of the river which winds
round the castle on three sides.
The
chapel was established by Henry's son, William, in
1447, a short distance from the castle on the site
of a former chapel. It was never finished and consists
only of choir space, parts of the east transept walls.....
