a Gossip of Romance, first published in Longman's
Magazine (November 1882) the Scottish novelist,
essayist and poet Robert Louis Stevenson wrote of
his topographical inspirations:
Some
places speak distinctly. Certain dank gardens cry
aloud for a murder; certain old houses demand to be
haunted; certain coasts are set apart for shipwreck...The
old Hawes Inn at Queensferry makes a smilar call upon
my fancy.....
