When World War I began, many of those who joined the Canadian Army were ex-Brits coming back to fight for Britain. They were men like; Albert Archibald, a waiter in Toronto, originally from Aberdeen; Alex Anderson, a labourer in Winnipeg, originally from Murrayshire; Alan Campbell, a stonecutter in Montreal, originally from Stornoway; Charlie Cameron, a carpenter, from Toronto, originally from the Isle of Mull; Charles Stewart, a clerk, from Vancouver, originally from Dufton.
When these men returned, having fought and suffered together under a Canadian flag, they came back with a new sense of nationality, a pride, a feeling that they were in fact Canadian. When they returned they came back Happily Scottish Proudly Canadian.
